Oberschlesien und das Ruhrgebiet weisen viele Gemeinsamkeiten auf. Kohle und Stahl prägten beide Regionen: Zechen und Hochöfen dominieren Arbeiterkolonien und gründerzeitliche Geschäftsviertel. Repräsentative Verwaltungsbauten, Villen und Kirchen zeugen vom Ehrgeiz, die gängigen Vorurteile zu - widerlegen, dass Industriegebiete von vornherein unwirtlich und hässlich wären. Fotos und Ansichtskarten dokumentieren Bauten und Anlagen, wie sie für mitteleuropäische Montanreviere typisch sind. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die parallele Entwicklung der Schwerindustrie um 1900 im Westen und Osten des Deutschen Kaiserreichs in einer vergleichbaren Architektursprache ihren Niederschlag fand. Die bauliche Überlieferung wird auch in ihrem historischen Zeugniswert interpretiert. Schauplatz von polnischdeutscher Geschichte war dabei nicht nur Oberschlesien. Auch im Ruhrgebiet lebten um 1900 ungefähr 450.000 "Ruhrpolen" mit polnischer Muttersprache
