Die Villa Schöningen liegt an der Glienicker Brücke, an der Nahtstelle zwischen Berlin und Potsdam, zwischen Ost und West, dort, wo im kalten Krieg vor den Kamera-Augen der Weltöffentlichkeit amerikanische und sowjetische Agenten ausgetauscht wurden. Wie Jahresringe eins Baumes schichten sich die Epochen und Episoden in der Geschichte der 1843 von Ludwig Persius errichteten italienischen Turmvilla ab: gegründet aus der ästhetischen Laune eines romantischen Königs, belebt und bewohnt von de jüdischen Mitgründer der Deutschen Bank, Ort der Kunst, dann Opfer deutscher Nazis und russischer Kommunisten, später sozialistische DDR-Kindererziehungsanstalt, schließlich Beinaheopfer einer Immobilienentwicklungsidee. Aus der schon fast zum Abriss freigegebenen Villa ist nach sorgfältiger denkmalgerechter Renovierung ein Museum geworden – ein öffentlicher Ort der Geschichte und der Kunst. Im Zentrum der historischen Dauerausstellung steht die Geschichte der Glienicker Brücke und ihrer Rolle während der deutschen Teilung. Als zweites Standbein werden Ausstellungen mit zeitgenössischer Kunst gezeigt, die sich im weitesten Sinne mit den Themen des Ortes beschäftigt – Kalter Krieg, Deutsche Teilung, Deutsche Einheit, 1989, Totalitarismus und Demokratie, Unfreiheit und Freiheit.
