Summary: Das Goldene Zeitalter gilt als Höhepunkt der niederländischen Malerei. Die prachtvollen Bilder vermitteln Macht, Wohlstand und Lebenskultur der Holländer im 17. Jahrhundert. Eine neue Wertschätzung erfuhren die Gemälde um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, besonders in Frankreich. Jean-Pierre Pescatore (1793-1855), ein Pariser Bankier aus Luxemburg, trug wie viele andere Grossbürger eine umfangreiche Sammlung niederländischer Meister zusammen. In einer einmaligen Schau werden den Werken der Luxemburger Sammlung prominente Gemälde aus dem Rijksmuseum Amsterdam zur Seite gestellt: von Frans Hals, Jan van Goyen, David Teniers d.J., Mitgliedern der Malerfamilie Ruisdael u.a. Die Textbeiträge stellen diese Auswahl hochkarätiger Bilder vor und erläutern die Sichtweisen der Literaten und Maler, die die Werke der Niederländer für sich wiederentdeckten, darunter Heine, Delacroix, Gautier und Hugo.
