Seit bald 20 Jahren steht das alte Schloß verlassen auf einer bewaldeten Höhe. Kein Wunder, daß sich die Leute von Nollagrund zuraunen, da oben gehe ein Gespenst um und heule durch die Föhren. Nur Frau Maxa will von diesem Gerede nichts wissen, und auch ihre fünf Kinder sollen diesem Aberglauben kein Gehör schenken. Das ist für den munteren Kurt gar nicht leicht, denn wenn er auch nicht an ein Schloßgespenst glaubt, so möchte er doch gar zu gern beweisen, daß es wirklich keins gibt. Wenn nun er und seine Schulkameraden dem Geist eine Herausforderung singen würden? Dann müßte es sich doch zeigen, ob es ein Gespenst gibt oder nicht. Aber der scheinbar so gut durchdachte Plan scheitert an seiner eigenen Schwäche. Und es kommt der Tag an dem auch die abergläubischsten Leute sagen: "Der Geist von Wildenstein ist ganz verschwunden, es geht ihm dort zu friedlich zu!" Wie das möglich war, ist eine wundersame Geschichte für sich, in der die Menschen mit uns lachen und weinen und zuweilen auf ein Wunder warten, das ein liebendes Geschick einem gläubigen Herzen schenken will. Es scheint, sie warten nicht vergebens.
