Amsterdam was in de Gouden Eeuw een van de belangrijkste productiecentra voor prenten in Europa. Dit boek biedt een levendig beeld van die glorietijd. In de inleiding wordt een overzicht gegeven van de toonaangevende Amsterdamse prentmakers, de organisatievormen waarin ze werkten en de vernieuwingen op technisch én artistiek gebied. De overige hoofdstukken staan drie typen prentmakers centraal: Rembrandt, een van de grootste prentmakers ooit, die het hele proces van ontwerpen, vervaardigen en uitgeven zelf in de hand hield; Salomon Savery die als graveur in opdracht van anderen werkte; en tenslotte Cornelis Danckerts en zijn zonen die in hun bedrijf prenten vervaardigden en verhandelden.
