Rezension: Unter die grossen Entdecker und Forschungsreisenden der Reihe (hier zuletzt Hans-Wilm Schütte: "Marco Polo", 2012) wurde nun auch der Mecklenburger Pfarrerssohn, Kaufmann und Trojaentdecker Schliemann aufgenommen. Als Trojaausgräber wurde er weltberühmt, obwohl sich die Gelehrten bis heute darum streiten, ob es sich bei den von Schliemann freigelegten Siedlungsresten tatsächlich um die bei Homer beschriebene Feste Ilion handelt. In dem mit zeitgenössischen Stichen, Fotos, Reproduktionen und Karten illustrierten Band wird sein steiniger Lebensweg nachgezeichnet, seine Autobiografie kritisch korrigiert, aber auch Stellung gegen die Verunglimpfung Schliemanns als reinen Schatzgräber bezogen. Der Publikationsreihe entsprechend ausführlich werden seine Grabungen in Troja, Mykene, Tiryns und Orchomenos behandelt. Nach der knappen biografischen Einführung von J. Cobet ("Beck Wissen"; 1997; lieferbar) und vor umfangreicheren Biografien wie Leo Deuel (zuletzt 1994; vergriffen). (2)
