In einer Höhle kniet Adolphe Thiers als Mönch betend vor einem an einen Schädel angelehnten Buch, das neben einer Büste der Concorde steht. Zu seinen Füßen liegen (neben einem Krug, auf dem ein mit bourbonischen Lilien verzierter Kannen-Hahn sitzt) zwei Bücher: "Geschichte der französischen Revolution" und "das Konsulat und das Kaiserreich". Rechts präsentiert ihm ein Dämon eine bekrönte comte de Paris-Birne auf einem Tablett; hinter Thiers links sitzt ein magerer, mit der Kaiserkrone bekrönter Adler, der ein "N" für "Napoléon" auf der Brust trägt; über ihm fliegt eine bekrönte Comte de Chambord-Fledermaus. Im Vordergrund sitzt eine Eule auf einer skelettartigen Kreatur; beide tragen die phrygische Mütze. Diese Karikatur, die die "Versuchung des heiligen Antonius" von David Teniers des Jüngeren nachahmt, spielt auf die mühsame Entstehung der III. Republik an: Thiers wird von verschiedenen Regierungsformen versucht.
