Die Habsburgermonarchie war über Jahrhunderte eine der mächtigsten Dynastien Europas. Der Erste Weltkrieg gab ihr den Todesstoß und stürzte die österreichische Gesellschaft in Krise und Chaos. In der Literatur aber lebt der habsburgische Mythos fort. Er ist sogar wirkungsmächtiger denn je, hat aber in den Romanen der Zwischenkriegszeit sein Gesicht spürbar verändert: Im Glanz der Monarchie spiegelt sich nun zugleich deren Morbidität, in die Sehnsucht nach der guten alten Zeit mischt sich Überdruss – die k. u. k.-Nostalgie trägt zunehmend kritische Untertöne. Welche Bedingungen und Beweggründe zu diesem Wahrnehmungswandel geführt haben, zeigt Halit Üründü am Beispiel der Romane "Radetzkymarsch" von Joseph Roth, "Rausch der Verwandlung" von Stefan Zweig und "Auf dem Floß" von George Saiko.
