Der Journalist und Autor (u.a. "Die Allendes") erzählt das Leben bekannter und unbekannter Entdecker. Pytheas von Massilia (heute Marseille) etwa erreichte im 4. vorchristlichen Jahrhundert Island oder wahrscheinlicher Norwegen und handelte vermutlich mit Bernstein. Auch über andere frühe Entdecker wie Leif Eriksson und Ibn Battuta gibt es nur wenige überprüfbare Tatsachen. Auf sichererem Boden ist der Autor bei Magellan, dessen Mannschaft die Welt umsegelte, während er starb. Wenig bekannt ist Thaddäus Haenke, der von 1793 bis 1810 Südamerika erforschte. Insgesamt eine gelungene Auswahl von Entdeckern, wobei Haenke allerdings wie z.B. bei Stanley deren negative Verwicklung in den Kolonialismus herunterspielt. Trotzdem ein überzeugender Band, der spannend und unterhaltsam in die jeweilige Biografie einführt, zugleich aber auch den historischen Kontext skizziert. Insgesamt empfehlenswert, gerade auch für Schulbüchereien. Ab 12
