Beide betonen die Frömmigkeit des Dichters, charakterisieren ihn als geselligen und bodenständigen Familienmenschen. Sie berichten die wichtigen Stationen seines Lebens, Studium, die ersten beruflichen Versuche in Kopenhagen und Hamburg, die Zeit als Redakteur des "Wandsbecker Bothen", die kurze Darmstädter Episode und die Rückkehr in die Heimat, der Claudius bis zum Tod treu sein wird. Sie zeigen seine Abneigung der französischen Revolution gegenüber, seine Treue zum Absolutismus und - trotz seines überzeugten Protestantismus - seine Toleranz jedweder Religion und Konfession gegenüber. Und sie verdeutlichen die bleibende Wirkung seines Werks für die deutsche Literatur. Der Text des Theologen Benedict ist (im Vergleich zu M. Geck, in dieser Nr.) wesentlich gestraffter und stellt noch deutlicher das Religiöse in den Vordergrund
