Vorliegend wird erstmalig die Bedeutung Berlins für die Kunst Max Beckmanns thematisiert. Beckmann profilierte sich als junger Künstler vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg von 1904 bis 1914 in Berlin und lebte noch einmal von 1933 bis 1937 nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten bis zu seiner Emigration nach Amsterdam in der Stadt. Aber auch in seinen Frankfurter Jahren, von 1915 bis 1933, reiste er oft in die Stadt und prägte die Kunstszene Berlins entscheidend mit. Der Katalog spiegelt den Stand der Beckmann-Forschung zum Thema wider und versammelt Werke des Künstlers, die in Berlin entstanden, die inhaltlich mit der Stadt verknüpft sind oder die in großen Ausstellungen in Berlin vertreten waren. „Erstmals widmet sich die Berlinische Galerie mit „Max Beckmann in Berlin“ einem Thema, das bisher im Kanon der vielen Beckmann-Ausstellungen ein Desiderat war...
