Der u.a. in den USA überaus beliebte Sport "Baseball" ist in Deutschland immer noch eine Randsportart. Entsprechend wenige Publikationen erscheinen hierzulande auf dem Buchmarkt. Von Claus Melchior, der bisher nur Fußballbücher veröffentlicht hat - "Legenden in Weiß und Blau" (BA 8/99), "Die Löwen" und "111 Gründe, den TSV 1860 München zu lieben" (beide hier nicht angezeigt) -, erscheint nun eine Kulturgeschichte über den Baseball-Sport. Das Buch ist in 7 Kapitel aufgeteilt, 6 zeitliche Epochen (von den Anfängen bis heute) und "Baseball in Deutschland". Dazwischen gibt es Exkurse ("Extra Innings", z.B. über Baseball und Literatur oder Baseball und Film) und zahlreiche Porträts, überwiegend über berühmte Spieler (mit Schwarz-Weiß-Illustrationen). Das Buch ist sehr kurzweilig und unterhaltsam geschrieben und daher für jeden, der zumindest ein wenig Interesse an Baseball aufweist, empfehlenswert. Bücher über Baseballregeln (zuletzt "Regelheft Baseball", ID-G 33/12) erscheinen in Deutschland, mit dem (kultur-)geschichtlichen Schwerpunkt ist dieser Titel jedoch einmalig.
