Der Augsburger Maler und Südamerikareisende Moritz Rugendas traf 1848 in München die junge, aus dem Baltikum stammende Malerin Julie Hagen und wurde ihr Mentor. Die Ausstellung verfolgt die Spuren dieser bisher unbekannten Freundschaft, die aus den wiederentdeckten Briefen der Künstlerin nachgezeichnet werden kann.
