In the Weimar Republic Königsberg i. Pr. experienced a profound urban transformation. Numerous building projects have been realized, including the first civilian airport in the world (1922-23) or the German East Fair (1920). In the study the author presents the genesis of these projects and investigates their functional and symbolic meaning. He comes to the conclusion that the island position of East Prussia, which was created in 1919, had no negative effect on the development of Königsberg i. Pr., but - on the contrary - acted as a catalyst for a comprehensive modernization process. The city council and the Oberpräsident initiated together with local merchants in only ten years a complex modernization process, which aimed at the modernization of the social infrastructure and the transport system by land, sea and air. So, trade and commerce were promoted. This was only possible because East Prussia enjoyed the special attention of the government in Berlin after the separation from the Reich in 1919. By granting special credits Berlin wanted to revitalize the economy and in this way contain a migration of the German-speaking population from East Prussia. Therefore, the efforts were not only economically motivated, but in particular served as a tool for a possible change of boundary in the future.
