Die Grossherzogliche Gemäldegalerie Oldenburg zählte zu den traditionsreichen fürstlichen Gemäldesammlungen Deutschlands und bestand aus zahlreichen herausragenden Werken Alter Meister. Hervorgegangen aus der Sammlung des Goethemalers J. H. W. Tischbein entwickelte sich die Galerie zu einem kulturellen Leuchtturm im deutschen Nordwesten und genoss internationales Ansehen. Nach ihrer Auflösung 1918 infolge der Abdankung des Grossherzogs verblieben zwei Drittel ihres Bestands in Oldenburg und gingen in den Besitz des Landesmuseums über, während ein Drittel im Ausland verkauft und in alle Welt verstreut wurde. Dieser Verlust war ein massgeblicher Auslöser für den Erlass des ersten deutschen Kulturgutschutzgesetzes. Der Katalog rekonstruiert erstmals die gesamte Sammlung nach den Kriterien eines kritischen Bestandskatalogs, spürt den verlorenen Werken nach und publiziert den noch in Oldenburg vorhandenen Bestand. Aufsätze zur Entstehung ebenso wie der Auflösung der Sammlung kontextualisieren die Forschungsergebnisse und bieten ein umfassendes Bild über die Oldenburger Gemäldegalerie
