Ein »verirrter Bürger« – das Thomas-Mann-Zitat über den Möchtegern-Künstler Tonio Kröger kann mit leicht veränderter Begründung auch auf die meisten Autoren der linksdemokratischen Wochenschrift DIE WELTBÜHNE angewandt werden. Sie waren größtenteils bürgerlicher Herkunft, hatten studiert – der Kleinbürgersohn Carl von Ossietzky, der in ärmlichen Verhältnissen in Hamburg aufwuchs, war die Ausnahme, die die Regel bestätigt. Dafür brachen auch gutverdienende Schriftsteller aus wohlhabenden Hause, wie etwa Kurt Tucholsky oder Kurt Hiller, zumindest von den politischen Ideen her mit ihren Elternhäusern und Hintergründen, suchten wie auch Ossietzky nach einem Bündnis mit dem von ihnen durch seine Lebensweise getrennte Industrieproletariat: eine Hoffnung, die sich bald zerschlug.
