The chapter explores the psychosocial processes people aged 60+ go through as a result of visiting art galleries that may lead to their wellbeing. The work focuses on contemporary visual art in galleries as I argue that it has a particualr power to stimulate debate, providing an opportunity for older people to actively contribute to society. The chapter addresses the impact on participants of engaging with contemporary art gallery programmes by interlinking the concepts of cultural capital (Bourdieu 1986) and social capital (Putnam 2000). This advances the field by using these constructs as both concepts and methods to explain the impact of a person's existing levels on participation, the shifts that occur as a result of participation and the impact of participation. It is important to provide a close exploration of the processes individuals go through that may lead to wellbeing and these constructs are critically important in allowing us to explore wider questions about the way people use art to build their identities, develop social relationships and engage with civic life. The chapter examines how a range of older visitors with different prior experiences of engagement with cultural institutions make sense of and draw meaning from the art in galleries.
