Zu den verdrängten Themen deutscher Geschichte gehört auch die kurzzeitige Rolle Berlins als Zentrum des deutschen Kolonialimperialismus in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten des wilhelminischen Kaiserreiches. In der Stadt hatten die Kolonialverwaltung sowie wissenschaftliche Institutionen zur Erforschung der überseeischen Welt ihren Sitz. Vor allem existierte in der »Reichs(kolonial)hauptstadt« auch eine afrikanische Diaspora, die nicht zuletzt auf Grund des kolonialen Engagements Deutschlands entstanden ist. Das reich bebilderte Buch will diese koloniale Vergangenheit Berlins erkunden und zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung damit anregen. Dabei erstreckt sich der zeitliche Bogen von den ersten Kolonisationsversuchen Ende des 17. und Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts über die deutsche Überseeherrschaft 1884-1918, die Jahre des Kolonialrevisionismus bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges.
