Content: The authors present and consider five alternative szenarios of development for Southeast Asia - especially, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Data on foreign direct investment (FDI), trade and currency valuation provide their basis for understanding the relations among these countries as well as their relations with the USA, China, and Japan. According to the findings of the authors, the bilateral and multilateral relations between the USA and Japan on the one hand, and the ASEAN political economies on the other, encompass considerable diversity and are pregnant with the possibility of change.
