Content: Those who would reject "the state" as a useful concept for political analysis fall into one of two camps. The first of these maintains that this concept has never been of more than limited usefulness. The second maintains that, though once useful, the state is now a concept whose time has gone. Taking the not inconsiderable literature of the Asian NICs (Newly Industrializing Countries) as its focus, the author addresses both camps. He notes into the 1980s, and to the present, the state has been and is of fundamental importance. (DÜI-Sen)
