Content: A report on the turbulent political scene in Israel and on the factors which impede the acceptance of the Baker plan which calls for an Israeli-Palestinian meeting to discuss the election proposal. It is argued that a true peace process has not yet been launched. A second topic deals with the mass exodus of Jews from the Soviet Union and their arrival in Israel. In this context the U.S. immigration practice is scrutinized and figures are evaluated. Contrary to Arab accusations the analysis shows that the charge of closed borders is not born out by the facts. Rather the rate of immigration in the United States is failing to keep pace with the vastly increased demand, forcing the bulk of emigrants to go to Israel. Also discussed are the problems of housing the immigrants in Israel. It is forecast that many will be drawn to the cheap apartments and houses in the existing suburban-type settlements. (DÜI-Asd)
