Whether, and to what extent, the analysis and conception of German geo-political policies is relevant in present thinking and for shaping the future remains to be seen. This essay points out that the potential answers to this question are not only dependent on the current political and military developments in the "Greater Middle East", but also on the policies initiated by powers beyond the borders of this region. The main motives behind this intensive cooperation have been forgotten. Nevertheless, their geopolitical dimension extends way beyond the bi-lateral relationship between Afghanistan and Germany to touch on the crucial question of cooperation between Europe and Islam and Islamic Asia. Afghanistan and its immediate neighbours are going to play a key role in the global struggle for a new world order in the future
