Macau was the first port on the China coast to come under the influence of a foreign power and will be the last to return to Chinese sovereignty. Macau is by far the smallest entity in Greater China. Although small, Macau has had a unique role to play in its relationship with the PRC, Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese. The article decribes the internal workings and special functions of the territory and assesses Macau's position in Greater China in the coming century. (DÜI-Sen)
