Apart from Hitler, Goebbels has been claimed to have been "the only truly interesting figure" within the command of Nazi leadership. Due to recent accessibility to additional material stored in archives in Moscow, Goebbels' diaries have now been fully documented for the first time. These records confirm the picture of an absolutely spineless person, equally consumed by a craving for admiration as well as overcome by bootlicking servility when confronted by Hitler. Goebbels was keenly aware that the owed his very existence to the fanatic belief in the Führer, that Hitler's messianic aura was his own creation. It was only logical that Goebbels, colder and more cynical than any of the former vassals who had already fled, should follow Hitler in death, together with his wife and six children in a kind of "Schauopfer".
