The sharp rise in the number of university students in all countries raises new problems and leads to disillusionment with degrees. These overloaded institutions may perhaps be privatised, managed like businesses and equipped with interactive teaching techniques. Among various possibilities, the author has discerned a policy of opening tertiary education to the masses, avoiding elitism and mediocrity, and private funding without compromising the aims of university education. But he also sees moves to distance universities from the social elite and political classes (without losing their support), responses to the challenges of language and identity, and access to universal education.
