Theatres of the past: virtual theatres? This is one of the fascinating questions explored in this book by researchers in literature, musicology, history, theatre studies, art history, architecture and digital sciences. These New Studies on the Performance Venues of Early Modernity propose to take up an epistemological challenge around the notion of virtual for research in theatre history by engaging different formats of reflection: interviews, multimedia articles, methodology briefs, virtual exhibition. The objective of this volume is to situate the performance venue as widely as possible at the crossroads of imaginaries and its practical uses. Anchored in the concrete of the archives, the contributions are part of the desire for an interpretative renewal based on hypotheses made possible by contemporary perspectives - new technologies, revaluation of objects formerly considered minor, interest in counterfactual approaches. The diversity of research objects, methods and results gathered not only sheds light on the material history of early modern performances, but also illustrates the need to cross-reference scientific approaches to renew the understanding and transmission of cultural practices of the past.
