Series Statement: Schriften des Vereins für Socialpolitik - Band 299
Content: Since 1998, competitively organised energy markets have become a reality. The initiatives of the European Union in particular have led to the old monopoly structures being dissolved and providers on the electricity and, in the future, also on the gas markets having to face competition. But how successful have the liberalisation efforts been so far? Opinions differ on this. For the Competition Working Group in the Economic Policy Committee of the Association for Social Policy, this was the reason to take stock of the liberalisation experiences to date and to hold a discussion of possible future prospects at its 2003 annual meeting. Carl-Christian von Weizsäcker, University of Cologne, shows to what extent the potential for competition on energy markets has already been exhausted and where economic theory sees some catching up to do. Dietmar Kuhnt, former CEO of RWE AG, summarizes the experiences of one of the major companies in the German electricity market. Michael Schöneich, General Manager of the Association of Municipal Companies, explains the opportunities and risks of municipal companies. Eberhard Meller, General Manager of the Association of the Electricity Industry, examines the European dimension of the topic. An energy exchange plays an important role in the functionality of liberalized energy markets, as the CEO of the European Energy Exchange Leipzig, Carlhans Uhle, reports. Bernd Rudolph, CEO of Thüga AG, takes a closer look at the gas market and shows the political and business challenges associated with it. Alfred Richmann, General Manager of the Association of Industrial Energy and Power Industries, talks about the reality of the electricity and gas markets from his point of view. Robert Werner, CEO of Greenpeace energy eG, which operates in the green electricity market, works on the experiences of his company. Carl-Christian von Weizsäcker places the practical presentations in the context of competition theory and policy in his final scientific presentation. The volume offers scientists and practitioners an overview of the current competitive situation and interests on the electricity and gas markets.
