"Rum Ortodoks toplumu, Osmanlı dönemindeki yeni yaşamını "Milletbaşı" unvanı ile Patrik liderliğinde ve Patrikhane çatısı altında sürdürür. Bu dönemde Bizans kiliselerinin bir kısmı, özellikle kubbeli yapılar, çoğu cami olmak üzere yeni işlevleriyle kullanıma sokulmuş; geriye kalan kiliseler ise onarımlar ya da yeniden yapımlar sonucu, Rum Ortodoks toplumunun ibadet mekânları olarak işlevlerini sürdürmüştür... Osmanlı yönetiminde Hıristiyanların, dini yapıları ile ilgili inşa faaliyetlerinde uyulması zorunlu kurallar vardı. Tanzimat dönemine kadar Osmanlı yönetiminde, yeni kilise inşa edilmesi yasaktı. Bir kilisenin yeniden inşa edilmesi ise, ancak eskiden kilise olduğunun kanıtlanması halinde, aynı yerde ve aynı özelliklerde yapılması koşuluyla mümkündü... Tanzimat öncesi Rum Ortodoks kiliseleri, "Osmanlı" kavramı çerçevesinde adeta aynı reçete ile oluşturulmuş; özgün nitelikte ve sanat tarihi bağlamında bütünlük gösteren yapılardır. Rum kiliselerinin mimari karakteri, ondokuzuncu yüzyılın ilk yarısında Tanzimat ve Islahat fermanları ile yaşanan değişim süreci sonrasında kaybedilmiştir. Bu nedenle, kitabın kapsamı 1856 tarihli Islahat Fermanı ile sınırlanır... Geniş bilgiler, ayrıntılı anlatım ve bilgilendirici fotoğraflarla alanındaki tek yetkin kaynak." -- "The Greek Orthodox community continues its new life in the Ottoman period under the leadership of the Patriarch and under the roof of the Patriarchate with the title "Milletbaşı". During this period, some of the Byzantine churches, especially domed structures, were put into use with their new functions, most of them being mosques; the remaining churches, as a result of repairs or reconstructions, continued to function as places of worship of the Greek Orthodox community... In the Ottoman administration, Christians had rules that must be followed in their construction activities related to their religious structures. Until the Tanzimat period, it was forbidden to build new churches under Ottoman rule. The reconstruction of a church was only possible if it was proved to be a church in the past, provided that it was built in the same place and with the same features... Before the Tanzimat, Greek Orthodox churches were created with the same prescription under the concept of "Ottoman;; they are unique and have integrity in the context of art history. The architectural character of the Greek churches was lost in the first half of the nineteenth century after the change process with the Tanzimat and Islahat edicts. Therefore, the scope of the book is limited to the Edict of Reforms dated 1856... The only competent source in the field with extensive information, detailed narrative and informative photographs."
