Seit der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts schlossen sich Jüdinnen - wie andere Frauen aus den gehobenen gesellschaftlichen Schichten - in Österreich, der Schweiz und Deutschland in Vereinen zusammen. Diese jüdischen Frauenvereine entfalteten sozialfürsorgerische Aktivitäten, die in der Tradition religiöser Wohlfahrt standen, aber sehr bald eigenständige Formen entwickelten. Die Bedeutung dieser Zusammenschlüsse jüdischer Frauen liegt auch nicht ausschließlich in ihrem sozialen Anspruch und ihrer Praxis, sondern ebenso in der Erfahrung von Öffentlichkeit, den sie den Aktivistinnen boten. In diesem Sinne sind sie Teil der europäischen Frauenbewegung. Mit Beiträgen von Dieter J. Hecht, Elisabeth Malleier, Michaela Raggam-Blesch, Martina Steer, Elisabet Torggler und Elisabeth Weingarten-Guggenheim.
