Über 20 Millionen Männer, Frauen und Kinder aus fast allen Ländern Europas wurden als "Fremdarbeiter", Kriegsgefangene oder KZ-Häftlinge in das nationalsozialistische Deutschland verschleppt oder mussten in den von der Wehrmacht besetzten Gebieten Zwangsarbeit leisten. Spätestens seit 1942 gehörten Zwangsarbeiter zum Alltag im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland. Die aus allen Teilen Europas, vor allem aus den östlichen Ländern, deportierten Arbeitskräfte wurden überall eingesetzt: in Rüstungsbetrieben ebenso wie auf Baustellen, in der Landwirtschaft, im Handwerk, in öffentlichen Einrichtungen und in Privathaushalten. Ob als Besatzungssoldat in Polen oder als Bäuerin in Thüringen - alle Deutschen begegneten Zwangsarbeitern, viele profitierten davon. Zwangsarbeit war kein Geheimnis, sie war ein weitgehend öffentlich stattfindendes Verbrechen. Die Ausstellung "Zwangsarbeit. Die Deutschen, die Zwangsarbeiter und der Krieg" erzählt erstmals die gesamte Geschichte dieses Verbrechens und seiner Folgen nach 1945. Kuratiert wurde sie von der Stiftung Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora, initiiert und gefördert von der Stiftung ůErinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunftś. Die Schirmherrschaft für die Ausstellung hat Bundespräsident Christian Wulff übernommen. Erste Station der internationalen Ausstellungstournee ist das Jüdische Museum Berlin, weitere Stationen in europäischen Hauptstädten sowie in Nordamerika sind geplant.
