Wie fand unter den autoritären Bedingungen der DDR eine freie künstlerische Fotografie ihren Ausdruck? Und wie hat sich diese über die Jahrzehnte hinweg verändert? Als Ergebnis einer intensiven Forschungsarbeit entstand die erste umfassende Ausstellung mit der dazugehörigen Publikation zur künstlerischen Fotografie in der DDR. Anhand der 33 ausgewählten Autoren wird deutlich, dass es trotz zahlreicher Behinderungen eine freie künstlerische Fotografie gab, die den Zustand der Gesellschaft kritisch reflektierte. Die ausgewählten Positionen vermitteln die wichtigsten Entwicklungsstränge der künstlerischen Fotografie in der DDR: Montage und Experiment, Dokumentarismus und Sozialreportage sowie die junge Fotografie der 1980er-Jahre.
