Anfang der 1930er-Jahre: Die junge Irmina versucht, in London Fuß zu fassen. Dort begegnet sie dem dunkelhäutigen Oxford-Stipendiaten Howard, der ebenso wie sie ein unabhängiges Leben führen will. Doch aus wirtschaftlichen und politischen Zwängen muss Irmina nach Deutschland zurück. Sie muss sich in der Folge mit dem Naziregime arrangieren, heiratet einen SS-Offizier, übersteht dann allein den Krieg und die Zeit danach. 1983 wird sie von Howard, jetzt Gouverneur von Barbados, eingeladen, doch auch da wird ihr klar, wie wenig von ihren Träumen übrig geblieben ist. Die deutsche Zeichnerin (s. zuletzt ID-A 34/13) breitet hier das Leben einer Frau in einer unruhigen, zwanghaften und grausamen Zeit aus, schildert eine Generation, die ein schreckliches Regime unterstützte, ohne sich der Verantwortung und der Konsequenzen bewusst zu sein. Sie entwickelt dabei eine sehr vielschichtige, spannungsreiche Handlung, wortreich erzählt und sehr gut unterstützt von plakativen, meist nur verhalten kolorierten Zeichnungen. Nachdenklich machender Comic-Roman, auch für Schulbibliotheken geeignet.
