Die deutsch-jüdische Debatte, die im Laufe des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts über den Autor des "Nathan" und Freund Moses Mendelssohns geführt wurde, folgte ganz unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen und Rezeptionsvorgaben. Dabei kam es immer wieder zu neuen, bislang nur unzureichend erforschten Formen der Achtung oder Missachtung, der Aneignung oder Verwerfung. Der vorliegende Band will diese verschlungenen Wege nachzeichnen und Lessing nicht nur von den Kontexten her begreifen, sondern auch umgekehrt diese über ihn erschließen. Viele Diskurse, die von Juden und Judentum handeln, waren an seiner singulären Position orientiert und boten sich zu eigener Profilierung ebenso wie zur Selbstvergewisserung an. Eine solche doppelte Perspektivierung führt zu einer weiteren Pluralisierung des Lessingbildes sowie zu einer stärkeren Ausdifferenzierung von Mentalitäten, Denkgewohnheiten, Klischees und Dispositiven auf dem weiten und – trotz großer Forschungsanstrengungen – keineswegs hinreichend vermessenen Feld deutsch-jüdischer (Literatur-)Geschichte.
