In welchem Verhältnis standen politische Anschauung und Wissenschaftsverständnis der Universitätsgelehrten in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts? In Hinblick auf diese Fragestellung ist die Universität Frankfurt am Main ein einzigartiges Studienobjekt: 1914 als städtische Stiftung unter maßgeblicher finanzieller Beteiligung jüdischer Bürger gegründet, betrieb die Hochschule eine liberale, gegenüber verschiedenen politischen Richtungen offene und die religiöse und konfessionelle Überzeugung ausklammernde Berufungspolitik. Um 1930 war der Anteil jüdischer Professoren an der Frankfurter Universität mit über hundert einer der höchsten im Deutschen Reich. Als im Zuge der nationalsozialistischen Rassenpolitik alle jüdischen Hochschullehrer entpflichtet wurden, drohte der Universität die Schließung. Im Fokus der z.T. englischsprachigen Beiträge stehen das institutionelle Miteinander der jüdischen Professoren und ihrer Gegenspieler – wie etwa der deutsch-völkischen Gelehrten – sowie Kommunikationsstrategien des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses im »Zeitalter der Extreme«.
