Migration and its aftermath remain among the most striking and controversially discussed topics of present and past media. Of particular interest in this respect are the spaces of cohabitation occupied by various groups of people. The representations of these ‘other spaces’ in literature, press, cinema and sound are the topic of the present volume. In eleven contributions, international scholars discuss the challenges of cohabited space during the decades 1920–50 – a period during which modern societies were, for the first time, confronted with the phenomenon of ‘cohabitated space’ at large. Migration führt zu Räumen des Zusammenlebens unterschiedlicher Gruppen. Ob sie gelingt, hängt nicht zuletzt davon ab, wie diese Räume und die Interaktion dort in den zeitgenössischen Medien dargestellt werden. Der vorliegende Band gibt elf Beispiele aus den Dekaden zwischen 1920 und 1950: Moderne Gesellschaften machten zu dieser Zeit erstmals in größerem Umfang die Erfahrung des mit anderen Gruppen geteilten Lebensraumes und gaben dieser Begegnung einen literarischen, publizistischen, kinematographischen und künstlerischen Ausdruck.
