Hof und Stadt zwei miteinander konkurrierende, aber auch kooperierende Organisationsformen von Macht und Herrschaft stellen ein Leitthema der mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Geschichte dar. Dem Hof mit einem zentralen Mittelpunkt, dem Herrscher, steht die Stadt mit dem mehrköpfigen Rat gegenüber. Gleichsam als Beispiel für die unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der politischen Organisation von Macht weisen beide Gebilde besonders im Spätmittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit viele Berührungspunkte auf, die zu einem komplexen Wechselspiel von Konfrontation, Koexistenz und Integration führten.
