Fall für den pensionierten Inspektor John Rebus wieder das bekannte Trio aus Rebus, Siobhan Clarke und Malcom Fox. Während Clarke im Fall eines erschlagenen Kronanwalts ermittelt, der zunächst wie Raubmord anmutet, begegnet Rebus einem alten Bekannten. Auf die Unterweltgröße Big Ger Cafferty wurde ein Anschlag verübt, nachdem ihm zuvor eine schriftliche Warnung zuging. Rebus nimmt sich des Falles an, der plötzlich eine Querverbindung zu Clarkes Fall aufweist, da auch der Anwalt eine identische Drohung erhielt. Was verbindet die Männer und wer will sie tot sehen? Während Rebus und Clarke ermitteln, muss sich Malcolm Fox derweil mit verdeckten Ermittlungen in Edinburghs Unterwelt beschäftigen. Viel zu tun im neuen Fall, der die 3 Ermittler in bekannter Manier zeigt und langsam alle Fäden zusammenlaufen lässt. Ian Rankin beherrscht sein Handwerk, was er auch mit diesem Buch wieder zeigt. Gekonnt geschriebene Krimikost, die viele treue Fans hat und deshalb auch in keinem Krimigrundbestand fehlen sollte!
