Der Roman beruht auf einem historischen Fall: Der Bauer Martin Guerre verlässt seine junge Frau und seinen kleinen Sohn 1548, um der Verfolgung durch seinen Vater zu entgehen. Nach 10 Jahren kehrt ein Mann zu der Familie zurück, der, wie ein Prozess klärt, nur seine Ähnlichkeit mit dem Bauern ausnützt. Die amerikanische Autorin Janet Lewis (1899-1998) veröffentlichte diesen Roman bereits 1941, der nun erstmals und in ausgezeichneter Übersetzung vorliegt. Lewis schildert die Geschichte aus Sicht der jungen Bertrande, die im Alter von 11 Jahren mit Martin Guerre verheiratet wird. Fest verhaftet in der Tradition, ist sie ihrem Mann bedingungslos ergeben. Lange wägt sie die Zweifel an der Identität des Rückkehrers ab, der ihr ausgesprochen liebevoll begegnet. Bertrande strengt einen Prozess an, dessen Urteil ihr aber nicht den erhofften Frieden bringt. Janet Lewis macht aus dieser Geschichte eine ausgeklügelt komponierte Studie über Täuschung und Betrug aber auch über Glück und Loyalität. Ein Lesevergnügen. Allen Bibliotheken sehr empfohlen.
