Diese Großmutter Sophie wird in der Familie totgeschwiegen und hat angeblich in Frankreich ein "sündhaftes" Leben geführt. Nun verfolgt Emilia verbissen alle Spuren. Sie reist in die Provence, wo das Wohnhaus und Atelier ihrer Großmutter Sophie stehen. Vor Emilia breitet sich das schwierige Leben einer Fotografin und Malerin aus, die um 1930 nach Paris floh. Dort trifft sie ihre große Liebe, einen Künstler, der sie jedoch verlässt. Ihre Tochter Pauline, die Mutter Emilias, wird bei der Verwandtschaft groß. Je mehr Emilia die Familiengeschichte recherchiert und sich in die Provence verliebt, umso mehr erkennt sie, dass ihrer Großmutter und auch ihrer Mutter übel mitgespielt wurde. Wird sie die Familiengeschichte korrigieren können? Wie in ihren anderen Romanen ("Die Stimmen über dem Meer", ID-A 47/15) nimmt die Autorin das Auffinden von Dokumenten oder diesmal des Porträts als Anlass, ihre Geschichte zu entwickeln. Spannender und in Verschränkung der Zeitebenen gelungener Familienroman.
