Vorher hatte sie hochschwanger das Weingut ihres Geliebten Franz verlassen, weil die familiären Verhältnisse, seit Franz im Krieg kämpfte, untragbar geworden waren. Als dieser nun beinamputiert heimkehrt, findet er das Gut ohne Irene, die Mutter in der Psychiatrie und den Vater intrigant vor. Immer mehr deckt Franz dessen Misswirtschaft auf. Irene hingegen erleidet das harte Los aller Fabrikarbeiterinnen, bis sie Josef trifft. Marie LaCrosse, alias Marita Spang, stellt im 2. Bd. der Weingut-Saga (zuerst: "In stürmischen Zeiten", ID-A 34/18) die Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen der Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter in den Mittelpunkt, ebenso Kinderarbeit und die Behandlung psychisch Kranker. Auch der Weinbau kommt nicht zu kurz. Auf fast 700 Seiten unsagbares Leid, quälend zu lesen, kaum Lichtblicke, aber am Ende versöhnlich. Mit Glossar und Literaturliste. Für Fans der Saga, Interessierte der Geschichte der Industrialisierung und Frauengeschichte allemal, als Fortsetzungsband zu Bd. 1 empfohlen.
