Tief gedemütigt verlässt Rosetta Sizilien und reist nach Buenos Aires. Die 13-jährige Raechel Bücherbaum lebt im Getto von Sorotshinzy. Als ihr Vater bei einem Pogrom erschlagen wird, kehrt sie Russland den Rücken. Rocco Bonfiglio, der Sohn eines berüchtigten Mafiakillers, hasst die Verbrecherorganisation. Als der Pate seines Vaters ihn in die ehrenwerte Gesellschaft aufnehmen will, weigert er sich und muss aus Palermo fliehen. In Buenos Aires begegnen sich die drei und beginnen, für ein besseres Leben zu kämpfen. Anhand der Schicksale von Rosetta, Raechel und Rocco entwirft Luca di Fulvio (zuletzt "Das Kind, das nachts die Sonne fand", ID-A 14/15) ein düsteres Panorama aus Gewalt, Flucht, Emigration, aber auch der Hoffnung auf Freiheit und ein besseres Leben. Der Roman ist sehr dramatisch geschrieben und hat einen opernhaft tragischen, bisweilen pathetischen Charakter. Das spannende und unterhaltsame Buch wird allen Bibliotheken empfohlen.
