Und trotzdem gelingt es von zeit zu Zeit, auch nach über drei Generationen, bislang ungehörte und unbekannte Aspekte dieser schrecklichen Zeit ans Licht zu bringen. "Der Freiwillige", über den Historiker und Journalist Jack Fairweather in seinem mehrfach ausgezeichneten Buch schreibt, war ein zu Gebinn des Krieges knapp vierzigjähriger polnischer Offizier namens Witold Pilecki. Wie viele andere gab dieser sich noch einige Zeit der Illusion hin, dass die Briten und Franzosen bald zur Rettung Polens kommen würden. Doch als klar wurde, dass der Westen Europas den Verbrechen von Hittler und Stalin in Osteuropa nur zusehen würde, nahm er einen Sonderauftrag der polischen Untergrundorganisation an. Die Deutschen hatten kurz zuvor in der Nähe der Kleinstadt Oswiecim im südlichen Polen ein neues Internierungslager errichtet. Pileckis Mission lautete: Sich ins Lager einzuschleusen, eine Untergrundgruppe aufzubauen und einen Aufstand zu organisieren.
