Spannend und anschaulich werden die jeweilige Krankheit, ihre Geschichte und die ihrer Bekämpfung beschrieben, aber der Leser erfährt weit übers Medizinische hinausgehend viel Interessantes, so z.B. dass Albrecht Dürer und Friedrich Schiller die Malaria hatten und Ramses V. vielleicht die Pocken oder dass die Gesichtsmasken mit dem langen Schnabel als Schutz vor der Pest erst seit dem 16. Jh. gebräuchlich sind. Ebenso interessant sind die eingestreuten Interviews mit Experten und das Bildmaterial. Das Buch knüpft an eine gleichnamige 6-teilige Fernsehdokumentation bei BR-alpha an und soll viele zusätzliche spannende Aspekte zeigen.
