Dialog- und monologreich inszeniert und in einer schlichten, metaphernreichen Sprache meist aus dem Blickwinkel Cromwells psychologisch feinfühlig in Gegenwartsform erzählt, entsteht ein komplexes, personenreiches "Wimmelbild" einer von Glaubens- und Machtintrigen geprägten vorelisabethanischen Epoche und ihrer schillerndsten Akteure. Wo die Vorgängerbände gut ankamen (und auch zum Nachlesen der Vorgeschichte noch vorhanden sind), gehört der voluminöse Trilogie-Abschluss für ambitionierte, an englischer Geschichte interessierte Leser/-innen zum Pflichtbestand (vgl.
