Dieser Reisekoffer birgt sechs abenteuerliche Berichte: der Reporter Henry M. Stanley begab sich 1870 auf die Suche nach dem lange vermissten Missionar David Livingstone in Zentralafrika. Wenige Jahre zuvor durchquerte der Deutsche Gerhard Rohlfs als wohl Erster die Sahara. Deutlich zivilisierter verlief die Reise, die Herzog Bernhard zu Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach 1825 an der Ostküste der USA unternahm; doch auch er kam aus dem Staunen kaum heraus. Umgekehrt erforschten Amerikaner ebenso die Alte Welt: So rüstete sich Mark Twain zur großen Riffelberg-Besteigung - laut Baedecker ein Spaziergang von drei Stunden. Twain aber weiß es besser: Sieben Tage sind bei solchen "Extremtouren" mindestens zu veranschlagen. Der Naturforscher Georg Forster wiederum schildert gegen Ende des 18 Jh. seine Erlebnisse auf Tahiti ganz seriös. Zeitlich viel weiter zurück führt der Bericht des venezianischen Händlers Marco Polo, der sich bereits im 13 Jh. an den Hof des Kublai Khan nach Peking begeben haben soll. Dichtung und Wahrheit sind hier nicht mehr zu trennen ...
