Die jüdische Familie Redlich emigriert 1938 nach Kenia, wo der Anwalt Walter Redlich als Verwalter auf einer Farm arbeitet. Während Ehefrau Jettel, Tochter aus gutbürgerlichem Hause, sich nur schwer an das neue Leben gewöhnt, blüht ihre einst schüchterne Tochter Regina förmlich auf. Sie lernt die Sprache und Gebräuche und findet im einheimischen Koch Owuor einen guten Freund. Doch der Verlust von Heimat und Verwandten und die Sprachlosigkeit darüber bedroht die Ehe von Jettel und Walter, und sie finden nur ganz langsam wieder zueinander. Als der Krieg endlich zu Ende ist, wird Walter eine Anstellung als Richter in Frankfurt angeboten. Aber nach all den Jahren, in denen sie das Leben in Kenia schätzen gelernt haben, ist es fraglich, ob Jettel und Regina ihn zurück nach Deutschland begleiten ...
