Zwischen dem Krim-Krieg (1853-1856) und dem Ersten Weltkrieg (1914-1918) gab es keinen großen, allgemeinen Krieg. Konflikte reichten im Zeitalter des Imperialismus häufig an die Schwelle eines solchen Krieges heran, aber Kriege zwischen Großmächten wurden bis 1914 bis auf wenige Ausnahmen vermieden. Von einem zentralen Blickwinkel aus trägt die Studie zur Neubewertung des internationalen Staatensystems im halben Jahrhundert vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg bei: Sie untersucht die zwischenstaatlichen Krisen, in denen ein Krieg zwischen Großmächten den Frieden bedrohte, und geht den Methoden und Wegen der Kriegsvermeidung und Deeskalation nach. In 33 Einzelstudien wird gezeigt, wie man Kriegsgefahr beseitigte. Die Erforschung der "Vermiedenen Kriege" vor 1914 belegt, daß die Menschen im Vergleich zu heute ein anderes Bewußtsein von Kriegsgefahr hatten.(AUT)
