Eine Abwägung zwischen einer durch Multipolarität gekennzeichneten und einer durch die Hegemonie eines Staates bestimmten Weltordnung unternimmt dieser Beitrag. Der Autor blickt einleitend auf den Wandel von multipolarer und hegemonialer Ordnung in der jüngeren Geschichte. Er fragt nach den Gründen für die Instabilität von Multipolarität und beleuchtet die daraus resultierenden sicherheitspolitischen Risiken. Die Darstellung wendet sich im Folgenden der aktuellen sicherheitspolitischen Lage zu und diskutiert denkbare Folgen des globalen Umbruchs. Hierfür entwickelt der Autor zwei Szenarien für den Ablauf der hegemonialen Transformation und blickt auf die USA sowie die Volksrepublik China als potentielle Hegemonialmächte in der näheren Zukunft. Kurze Schlussfolgerungen fassen die Darstellung zusammen.
