Den Ausbau der trilateralen Beziehungen zwischen Australien, Japan und Indien thematisiert dieser Beitrag. Ausgehend von einer Betrachtung der geopolitischen Lage sowie der Rivalität zwischen den USA und der Volksrepublik China in Ostasien und der Pazifikregion beleuchtet der Autor die Interessen der drei Staaten und ihrer politischen Führer. Er analysiert das Geflecht der bilateralen Beziehungen und fragt nach Formen der Zusammenarbeit in der Außenpolitik und Sicherheitspolitik eines entstehenden Dreierbündnisses. In diesem Zusammenhang werden auch unterschiedliche strategische Interessen der potentiellen Bündnispartner beleuchtet. Dabei steht insbesondere die traditionell enge Verbindung Australiens zu den USA im Fokus. Der Autor fragt nach Vorteilen und Risiken, die sich für Australien aus einer strategischen Kooperation mit Indien und Japan ergeben könnten.
