Nach den Pariser Anschlägen von Januar 2015 fand eine beeindruckende Solidarisierung von Muslimen weltweit mit den Opfern statt. Dies verwunderte umso mehr, als unter den Opfern auch Zeichner des Satiremagazins "Charlie Hebdo" waren, deren Mohammed-Karikaturen in den Jahren zuvor massive Proteste in islamisch geprägten Staaten ausgelöst hatten. Stärker als die Solidaritätsbekundungen wurden in der europäischen Öffentlichkeit jedoch die Proteste gegen die neue Ausgabe des Satireblatts registriert. Diese selektive Wahrnehmung ist auch durch eine konstante Erwartungshaltung europäischer Gesellschaften gegenüber Muslimen zu erklären, sich von Gewaltakten zu distanzieren, die im Namen des Islams verübt werden. Diese Forderung stärkt negative Assoziationen des Islams mit Terrorismus und Gewalt und nährt Angstreflexe und antiislamische Ressentiments, die dazu beitragen, dass sich Muslime in Europa zunehmend ausgegrenzt fühlen. Extremisten können dies zur Rekrutierung nutzen. Um dem entgegenzuwirken, sollten Politik und Medien entschieden gegen ein negatives Islambild vorgehen und den Rechtfertigungsdruck gegenüber Muslimen abbauen, der die Spaltung europäischer Gesellschaften befördert.(AUT)
